Located on the historic St. Marys waterfront, the St. Marys Submarine Museum opened its doors in March of 1996. With an extensive collection of submarine artifacts, information and interactive exhibits, visitors can see everything from torpedoes to training manuals. To give visitors a real hands on experience, the St. Marys Submarine Museum has a real periscope from a submarine. Visitors can look through the periscope and get a birds eye view of the St. Marys waterfront. The museum is also installing sonar equipment in the St. Marys river so that visitors can hear the different underwater sounds just as the sonar technician on a real submarine would hear them. | ||||
| At the Submarine Force Centennial Celebration on April 7, 2000, the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base dedicated the USS George Bancroft Sail Exhibit. The exhibit, only a few minutes from the museum at the Franklin Gate of the Sub Base, displays the actual sail of the USS George Bancroft on a simulated hull. The exhibit, which looks exactly like a submarine rising out of the water, no ground, is a great photo opportunity (since even those lucky enough to get a tour on a real submarine are not allowed to take pictures). The Sub Base has plans to include an indoor display at the Franklin Gate to accompany the exhibit. The exhibit is free and visitors do not have to go onto the base to visit it.
The museum also hosts the annual World War II Sub Vets Memorial Service in Camden County. Several thousand veterans from all over the world come to the service to reunite with shipmates and see the new breed of submariners at the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. Please visit the website for more information on the museum or annual memorial service. |
