In the early 18th century, several forts were built in Camden County because of its strategic location on the Atlantic Ocean. Camden's unique location remains important to the military today. Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, on the Atlantic coast of Camden County, is home to 8 ballistic missile submarines. It is the only base of its kind on the east coast of the United States. Submarine Group Ten (comprised of Submarine Squadrons Sixteen and Twenty) is home based at Kings Bay. The Trident Refit Facility and Trident Training Command support Group Ten by aiding the subs in maintaining war-fighter readiness.

Kings Bay is also a major economic impact to the area. With over 5000 active duty members, 200 reservists, 2500 civilian workers and 1600 contract workers, Kings Bay has a total payroll of over $300 million annually. The base also utilizes $90 million worth of goods and services.

As one of the most prestigious bases in the United States Navy, many senior active duty enlisted and officer personnel choose to serve at Kings Bay during their "twilight tour" (the final tour of their career). As a result, many retiring sailors decide to make Camden County their home.

The mix of civilians, active duty military and retired military has proven successful in Camden County. The base keeps its finger on the local pulse through the Camden County Military Community Council where local citizens share the pride of Kings Bay as one of the United States premier military installations.
